CAREERS GUIDANCE
From the first day that a student enters the Grammar School (even in
year seven), open access is provided to all careers material (careers
library, videos, booklets, etc.). Students are encouraged to seek out
information on any of the hundreds of careers available. Not
surprisingly, these opportunities are taken up by almost every student
in year seven, and it is not unusual, within a few weeks of a student
entering the school, for teaching staff to find themselves discussing
possible future careers. In subsequent years, students are counselled
by both the school and the Careers Guidance Officer.
EXAMINATIONS
At the end of year eleven, students sit for the General Certificate of
Secondary Education (G.C.S.E.) in whichever subjects the College and
the parents, by agreement, wish them to be entered. Throughout their
time at the College, students are considered for early entry for
examinations. Where there is a reasonable chance of a student
achieving success, the College will enter individual students one, two
or even three years early for one or more GCSEs (or AS levels). To
give encouragement and boost confidence, students can also be entered
for other external examinations during years nine and ten. Those
students whose first language is not English are able to sit the
University of Cambridge English Examinations at the College (from KET
right through to CPE).
THE SIXTH FORM
For those students who wish to take full advantage of the College’s
expertise throughout their school career, a small, select group of
individual students is permitted to stay on after GCSE for further
study. Students take both ‘A/S’ and ‘A2’ level examinations and there
is also the opportunity to take a mixture of A/S subjects, together
with additional GCSE subjects if required. For students who would like
an advanced level of study with a more practical bias, the College is
planning to include GNVQ provision. Sixth Formers have their own
common room and private study area. Sixth Form provision is
particularly strong in the areas of Mathematics, the Sciences
(Biology, Chemistry, Physics) Information Technology, Business
Studies, Art and English. |
